The Prairie Home story

The Prairie Home story began back in the mid-1990’s when John McCarthy starting thinking about the care needs of his aging mother, Grace. After looking around at many Elder Care facilities, he became aware of the lack of real emotional connection between the elderly residents who live in these homes and those who care for them. This lack of emotional interaction was upsetting to John, who felt that providing for the physical and health needs of an elderly person is not enough. He believed that the elderly also need emotional and spiritual care. Being a man of faith and prayer, he felt led to do something about the situation and soon set about establishing a home for the elderly which emphasizes loving kindness while providing full care assisted living.

Initially, the road was not an easy one. John and his wife, Fran invested their savings, home equity and borrowed money from John’s mother. John had a background in sales and education and so had a lot to learn about providing Elder Care. Prairie Home Assisted Living opened “The House of Grace” in January 1999.

John and Fran soon learned that they had to completely trust God to lead them on this new venture. There were many days when obstacles seemed ready to overtake them. “It was as if God was saying... “How far will you go on your own resources? When will you begin to trust me?” Many times, in the eleventh hour of a crisis, God would intervene and demonstrate his power and faithfulness. “We have seen many impossible situations turn completely around,” John says. As a result of learning to trust in God, Prairie Home’s second building, “The House of Faith” opened in 2002. Prairie Home Assisted Living continued to grow and in 2009, the third and largest building, “The House of Joy” was completed.

In 2012, John established a home health agency named HomeAid Health Care. HomeAid provides same loving care that Prairie Home is renowned for to the elderly who wish to remain living in their own homes. John states, “God has used Prairie Home and HomeAid to deepen my love, mature my faith, and help me learn to serve others.”

Prairie Home and HomeAid remains family owned and both business are managed by John’s son, Mike McCarthy, and daughter, Kate McCarthy.
