Daily Nourishment

Mornings are a peaceful and unhurried time at Prairie Home. Residents rise and have breakfast whenever they choose. Flexibility in morning meal times works well to suit early risers as well as those who like to sleep in. A breakfast buffet menu is available, but individual preferences are always accommodated. As in any home, the rhythm of daily life here often centers around meal time when residents gather in the cheerful, community dining area to share conversation over hearty, home-cooked meals. Lunch is served at noon and dinner is served at 5:00 PM. Snacks and beverages are available throughout the day and a special evening snack is served around 7:00 PM.

Nutrition & Wellness
The Prairie Home Nutrition Program is designed to ward off health issues and enhance the overall wellness of residents. Emphasis on nutrition is important for the aging. Health issues such as urinary tract infections, high blood pressure and blood sugar or weight loss can be avoided by following a nutrition program designed with elderly in mind. Prairie Home meals are nutritious and flavorful. Meals are cooked from scratch using fresh fruits and vegetables and every effort is made to avoid food products that are high in salt or full of preservatives.

Sugar Free
Sugar-free ingredients and products are another important aspect of Prairie Home’s nutritional program. As some residents are on special diets, every effort is made to reduce the amount of sugar used in our recipes. Many of our homemade desserts are totally sugar-free. In addition, whole grain breads and pastas are used to curb the consumption of excess starch.

Hydration
Proper hydration is an equally important issue for the elderly. Getting enough fluids is often an issue which most elderly folks forget about. At Prairie Home, we monitor the food and fluid intake of our residents. Water, milk, juice and fruit smoothies are offered at meal and snack times. In between meals, our Caregivers encourage drinking water throughout the day. The Prairie Home evening Happy Hour features our own cranberry or juice cocktails.
